On September 27, 2014, our family and world was abruptly changed when my brother James Metz was tragically killed in a mid-air collision. He was only 14 years old when an opportunity to experience aviation took my brother’s life. He was a freshman at Lancaster High School, and a trumpeter in the LHS band. He loved basketball, admiring LeBron James especially. James was skilled at basketball, and often would take the game, but not without my challenging him.
His imagination took he and his friends to many places, yet the place we hung out the most the summer before he left us for Heaven was the roof of our garage. Our parents did not know we were sneaking pizza up there, stealing plates and silverware from the kitchen (we were civilized, after all), but the famous “Joe Flading” video was recorded there, as well. If you knew my brother, then there is no need for me to tell you how funny he was, but if you didn’t know my brother, you might want to read more about him in the “My Brother” section of this site – there is a reason he was called the kid with the smile.
